It’s Not Just a Headshot

When clients come to see me sometimes they are not sure what they want but what they do know is they need a professional headshot for their online presence.

What to wear?

I can help with that!

I ask if they prefer a dark or a light background or suggest either depending on the look, feel, client.

I always give the client what they ask for, I’ll take a few shots and show them, then I will ask if it’s ok to put my own spin on it, Sure! so a quick change of light set up and away we go.

Studio headshot usually take between 10-20 minutes and of course always time for a little fun. My aim is to capture clients in their best light, adding a 3 dimensional feel by the use of light that suites them most.

My style is simple, elegant with a splash of classy, to communicate your personality and message as “the voice of individual you.”

Your best images are then sent to you for your selection, once selected, they are fully edited, fast turnaround time, sent to you online, web ready for you to use anyway you choose.

No time to come to me?

I’ll come and visit you at your place of work.

Don’t forget to ask what else I include with your corporate headshot.

It’s not ‘just’ a Headshot!

With social media and our online presence playing such a huge role today in the success of our businesses, it is now more important than ever to be seen often, and in the best possible light.

Sometimes we try and short cut this critical element by looking at our headshot as redundant, and as an unnecessary expense. But we should actually be looking at it as an opportunity to portray an image to our potential clients, to share our brand, and to show ‘the face behind the business’. We forget that when potential customers are looking at our businesses online, they are also looking at who we are and how we conduct business. They want to make sure that we are serious about quality and good customer service. If the photography on our website is done with a point-n-shoot and on-camera flash against a plain wall with a dark shadow around our head, it sends the wrong message. It shows lack of professionalism. And if we don’t appear to care about our own personal image, then why should our potential customers believe that we would use higher standards for the product or service we are offering?
The physical side of taking a ‘proper’ headshot requires the usage of standard professional equipment- camera, lenses, lighting, and photo editing software. But more importantly than that (about 100x more important) is the intangible aspect – Experience. Without the knowledge of how to effectively use camera gear, lighting (even daylight), or to be able to trouble shoot problems should they arise, leaves you back at square one.

Having a natural and trained artistic eye for posing and directing people in order to achieve the individual’s optimal look, is probably on the top of my list. Everyone is different and needs to be photographed a certain way according to their shape, hair color, gender, skin, and profession. Knowing what lighting to use, in what direction, with each face shape, makes all the difference in the world between an okay shot, and an amazing portrait. A good professional photographer will suggest the proper clothing, analyze the model’s face and then pose and light them accordingly. The last thing to consider is that depending on your profession or what the shot will be used for, you might want to add a little personality to your portrait. Showing your audience a little bit of you, will help them make a connection and start a bond before they even meet you.
How do we want to be seen? Do we want our audience to see us as real professionals with high standards, or are we satisfied with showing them our ‘mug-shot’?

Meet Chawki Mallouk

This was a collaboration with 3 other people, they have asked me not to include credits on my social pages.

These are the images I photographed on the day.

Chawki from Mallouk Shoes , a really lovely guy who allowed me into his place of business, his world if you like.

I didn’t want to come off all arty, as he completed his work, I asked “show me the love for your shoe” without moving any other part of his body he looked at me and replied “my art”

I was quick to respond with “I’m so happy you said that!” it really is!

2 hours of shoot time, in this time, he created his art, sharing his workflow, often forgetting I was there, a man who truly loves his creation and his work is just beautiful.

Having flat wide feet myself I can appreciate custom made shoes, especially for your wedding day.

Meet Grace from Behind The Hair.

Behind The Hair

Always a pleasure working with this gorgeous woman, such an inspiration!

Grace Vassallo is a mum, successful hairdresser, business owner, author and accredited coach.

Grace followed her passion for hair she’s had since an early age to complete Certificate III in hairdressing in 2000 with Pivot Point Hair Design College in Melbourne. While still learning, Grace was nominated to enter the WorldSkills competition, winning the state competition and making the national competition in Newcastle.
After graduating from the Certificate III course, she commenced working in a small barber shop. After wanting to grow her skills in all areas of hairdressing, she moved to a bigger salon and started growing her clientele. She discovered her passion for customer service whilst growing her clientele.
In 2003, Grace started her own business whilst working in the salon.
After having to cut down her workload in the field due to health concerns, Grace moved to the financial services industry for a change of pace. Her passion for hairdressing was well and truly alive and after 5 years she moved to study and gain her Diploma in Life Coaching through The Coaching Institute.
She founded Behind The Hair based on her passion for hairdressing and customer service to assist the salon owners to design their ideal salon business, grow clientele through an outstanding customer service experience and enjoy the rewards of being a salon owner.
Through her research and experience in the industry, she found many business owners were not investing in themselves or their staff and as a result, they paid the price dearly through working many long hours, having a high staff turnover, having an unsteady client base and being exhausted by the week’s end only to have to do it all over again the next week.
It’s her mission to create a movement in the industry and helping salon owners work less and earn more. To live life to the fullest by creating a business that can run without the owners necessarily being there. To have staff who LOVE working for their bosses and treat the business like it were their own. To have quality staff that stick around for the long haul, during the good and the bad times. To have a team that has each others backs. To have a solidly booked salon with clients who are hungry to come back for more and bring their friends along too!
She has created methodologies that have been proven to be successful in her own business and she wants to share it with salon owners who don’t have the time or money to keep making the costly mistakes that are holding them back from their full business potential.
There is so much more Behind The Hair…
