Bagan, Myanmar

Each side had it’s own unique Buddha, these temples were built by families to worship together.

Bagan is an ancient city in central Myanmar (formerly Burma), southwest of Mandalay. These amazing temples are the main attraction, there are thousands of them spread across the plain, each so very unique. A great time to view all of them is at sunrise from a hot air balloon or you can climb up most of them, but get there early to get a front row seat, no easy to climb up with gear on your back, they are steep! Sunset is also spectacular to witness, there is a man made tower, for a few bucks you can go all the way to the top and thankfully plenty of room to watch the golden sun go down, it was an amazing day to explore.

Smokin in Bagan

It’s always the people I meet along the way that make me more grateful travelling and learning about culture and lifestyle .

One of the things i find interesting is that neighbouring countries such as Bhutan, it’s illegal to smoke,  woman are frowned upon in India and some do all the smoking. This gorgeous woman seemed to enjoy her chill time and was happy to share, paper, bamboo? who knows.

Million Dollar Smile? (priceless)

For me no matter where I travel and what I see, nothing warms the heart faster than a sincere smile, moments earlier i turned to see this gorgeous woman chatting to my girls and smiling away, language barrier? I think not, she was fascinated by them and I couldn’t help but fall in love with her, and i had to  ask her for a hug, no journey is complete without the people you meet.

Incredible Smile….

Sweet little nun in Yangon, Bogyoke Aung San Market.smile

Is this the most incredible smile or what?!

Nothing grabs my attention faster than a beautiful heartfelt smile. These are the kind of smiles that let me know i am in exactly the right place and time. The first thing i noticed about the Burmese people is their wellness to smile, some just go for it, others will wait until they have caught your eyes, looking a little shy, woman and children will often wave at you as you pass by in a tut tut, on a train or anytime they feel like it as a reaction or they go first. Even the blokes will give you that smile that gives you that universal “welcome” Really lovely people, kind polite and all but ready to help.

Kyauk Kalap

Standing proud in the middle of a small, artificial lake is Kyauk Kalap, Hpa An, Myanmar, a tall finger of sheer rock mounted by one of the most unlikely pagodas in Myanmar. It is  a working monastery and is closed every day from 12pm to 1pm to allow the monks to meditate. From the top you can see great views of Mt Zwegabin, a great place for a sunset.

So it took awhile to get my driver to get off the tourist track and out meeting the real people, these little guys have been taken in and taken care of, eduction, food and shelter, they seem fairly happy and there were lots of giggles and smiles when me and my girls quietly sat in on their class. In the midst of it, my heart hurts my head spins, what can I do, i am just one person and my own to raise, i get overwhelmed with how much i would like to do, then breathe deeply and remember that little is a good start. Travel, open your eyes and heart, it’s not about thinking how good you got it, it’s about how we can make it better for others, together.

No gift is too small

Do not underestimate a small gift, to some it is huge, even a hug or a smile can make someones day, ask these little girls? Lets heal the world together, one small gift at a time.

Sunset in Bagan

bs

A great way to end another amazing day, this time no pagoda climbing, but up the view point tower in Bagan, Myanmar, 360 degree view and not overcrowded. An orange glow on all smiley faces watching as the sunsets …

Sunrise in Bagan.

silvia tomarchio photography_bagan_burma_myanmar.jpg

What an amazing way to welcome a new day! Sitting on top of just one of the 2000 or so Pagoda’s in Bagan, Myanmar. A few days in so I was still on Melbourne time and easy enough to get up, I woke up one of my girls, yes the one that will venture out with me with her eyes closed. A little scary getting up while it was still a little dark, everyone excited waiting for the hot air balloons and sunrise. Truly amazing sight, rumour has it that the Prime mister was on board the first one released on this day.
